The City of North Las Vegas
The City of North Las Vegas
stretches across the northern rim of the Las Vegas Valley. The City, which was incorporated in 1946,
encompasses 82.2 square miles within Clark County in Southern Nevada. North Las Vegas is the second-fastest
growing large city in America. Since 2000, North Las Vegas' population has grown
75.4 percent, making it home to 202,520 residents (December 2006). Roughly, 1,200 new residents move to
North Las Vegas each month. North Las Vegas is the fourth largest city in Nevada.
The City estimates that by the time it reaches build out in 2025, its population will be
521,303. In 2006, North Las Vegas celebrated its 60 year
anniversary.
City Government
The
City of North Las Vegas is a full-service municipality providing
recreational amenities, police and fire protection, and water
service. It operates under a Council-Manager form of
government, with a Mayor and four Council Members. All five are
elected at large; however, the Council Members must live within,
and serve, a specific ward. In addition to the Mayor and
Council, the City has one municipal judge, who is elected at
large. The city manager is appointed by the city council and
is the chief administrative officer of the city, overseeing daily
municipal operations.
History
In 1884, Conrad Kiel filed a land patent on 160 acres to
become one of the first recorded residents of what is now the
City of North Las Vegas.
On May 1, 1946 the city was incorporated. The population was
2,875 and total land area was 2.5 square miles.
Nellis Air Force Base
Located on the eastern boarder of North Las Vegas, the US Air
Force Air Warfare Center employees 10,000 people, making it the
largest employer in the Las Vegas Valley.
Nevada Test Site
The Nevada Test Site is a national test and demonstration
center for advanced defense technologies. They also form
ventures with private enterprise to conduct cutting-edge
research, development and manufacturing.
