Session 2 – Government, Planning & Development

Session 2 kicked off at the North Las Vegas Fire Administration Building in the Emergency Operations Center. Assistant City Manager and Session Day Chair, Maryann Ustick and Co-Chair, Terri Sheridan welcomed the class and presented a brief overview of city government.

Guest speakers from the City of North Las Vegas including Planning Director Frank Fiori and Economic Development Director Mike Majewski spoke to the class about current plans for the city and future developments in the works. They addressed how the city manages population growth and their department’s role in ensuring the city’s 2025 Vision Strategic Plan becomes a reality.

After a quick break, class participants broke up into two groups and were tasked with redeveloping North Las Vegas’ downtown brand identity. Moderators Larry Bender and Vicki Adams from the City’s branding and marketing task force were on hand to help each group present their strategic plan to a panel of experts including: Joe Cain, Silver Nugget Gaming; Professor John Schibrowsky, UNLV; and Dean Leavitt, City of North Las Vegas.

Class members ended the morning session with a virtual tour of the new City Hall and an interactive lunch with City of North Las Vegas Council and Planning Commission Members.

After lunch the class hopped a bus to Nellis Air Force Base where Colonel Steven Winklmann discussed the history and mission of Nellis AFB, ongoing encroachment issues, and the current economic impact of base development. Class members got to tour the Nellis airfield, newly developed housing and the largest Photovoltaic Array in North America.

The session day concluded with a panel discussion on managing growth. Panelists David Brown, Frank Fiori, Kevin Higgins and George Garcia discussed APEX and KPEX projects in North Las Vegas and the future of development in today’s business economy.

Session 1 – Community Volunteerism & Human Services

Community Volunteerism and Human Services Day began at Three Square. Guest speakers from Safe Nest, Habitat for Humanity, Positively Kids and PAWS spoke to the class about their organization’s mission and individual needs as well as the importance of giving back to the community.

After hearing from the various non-profit organizations, Three Square Director, Julie Murray gave the class a tour of their 70,000 sq. ft. facility including the two warehouse operations, state of the art kitchen and volunteer sorting center. Throughout the morning session class participants were encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the growing needs of North Las Vegas. In an effort to help support Three Square and for their interactive activity, the class helped sort though donations.

The session continued at the North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce where Jeff Ogden of United Way explained how their organization worked in conjunction with other non-profits in the valley. A perfect segway into the class project discussion, 2009 Leadership alumni Valerie Bailey and Carolyn Muse-Grant asked the class to consider all that they have learned about the importance of community volunteerism and human services and tasked them with brainstorming project options and opportunities to make a difference.

In the afternoon, class participants learned about the essence of servant leadership; identifying the twelve core values of serving others. Divided into four small groups, they were asked to describe the ideal City of North Las Vegas and develop and present a vision statement for this new city image. At the end of the day, they took a class vote for the best vision statement and were given a homework assignment to continue to work together as a class at refining the vision statement and prepare a final presentation to be given at the December Session.

Advance Session

This year’s Leadership North Las Vegas Program kicked off with an Advance Session at the beautiful Resort at Mt. Charleston. Lead by Program Facilitator Randy McCrillis of Elements Consulting, class participants were asked to step outside their comfort zone in an effort to get to know one another on a personal level.

At no time was the class permitted to talk about work or past employment. In fact, the first group exercise accelerated the getting acquainted process when each person had to talk about themselves without touching on conversation topics including family, pets, hobbies and other superficial context.

As the session continued, the class learned about various leadership styles and characteristics and gained a better understanding of themselves, their personality and their individual approach to leadership.

Smaller breakout sessions during day two of the Advance Session gave class participants the opportunity to examine their values, reflect on their life experiences and develop a better understanding of their classmates.

During this year’s Advance Session, the class was able to learn a lot about themselves and each other, what it means to be a leader and how to get the most out of others in terms of their ability to work collaboratively with a team.
